Why I love GELATIN

Until I delved into the world of gut health I thought gelatin was just used to make jelly. However, with much research and google searching, I have been led to this wonderful addition to my diet. I will share with you how it can aid you too in your health pursuits.

Gelatin is the purified protein derived by the selective hydrolysis of collagen from the skin, the connective tissue and/or bones of animals. It is an excellent source of protein providing all the essential amino acids required in our diet. There are several benefits of adding gelatin to your diet, the first being of most interest for an Osteopath like myself.

1. Gelatin protects your joints... research shows that athletes who took a collagen supplement experienced less pain in their joints, which could help improve performance for athletes and competitive fitness buffs. If you exercise a lot, eating gelatin can help keep your joints healthy and pain-free. Also, if you have inflammatory joint or bone diseases like arthritis or osteoporosis, getting adequate gelatin can potentially help you manage inflammation and pain as well as potentially build stronger bones.

2. Gelatin is great for gut health... it improves the integrity of the mucosal lining of the gut, draws water into the gut and this in turn helps to keep "things moving". It seems to be beneficial in people with leaky gut syndrome, which has been found to be a big factor in developing inflammation in the digestive system and food intolerances ensuing.

3. Gelatin is good for your skin... collagen is the primary element in skin and gelatin provides a good source of the two amino acids glycine and proline needed to produce collagen.

4. Gelatin helps you sleep better... Gelatin has a healthy dose of the amino acid glycine which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that decreases anxiety and helps you to relax. Gelatin can help you keep calm and promote a good night sleep.

Have I convinced you to try introducing Gelatin into your diet?  Well how does one do this? I take the easy option. I have found a great reliable source from Great Lakes and for our Aussie readers this is available via iherb online. I make up a hot drink with gelatin, some raw cacao powder, a few drops of stevia -  yum! A warming and nourishing drink. You can add it to soups and other warm foods (especially if you purchase the hydrolysed version).

The more traditional way to get gelatin into your diet is via a cook up using the carcass of animals to make a bone broth and getting the collagen from the tendons skin and marrow of the animal. This is time consuming, however it is worth the effort!!!
